One of the best performances at P. Fanatics — my old reading series — was on Easter 2012 and by the father-son duo of Fred Sasaki and Fred Sasaki.

Dan Shapiro and I were sad to hear the elder Fred Sasaki passed away recently. We thought it might be a good idea to share the audio from the Sasaki’s P. Fanatics performance to give everyone a good idea of how awesome, funny and the best kind of weird Fred Sasaki was.

I only met Mr. Sasaki that one time. He made an impression. The first thing he tried to do after walking into Cole’s Bar was to try and buy everyone in attendance a drink. Later, he took the stage with his son to perform from their series of self-help zines titled “How to Fix You.” They covered basic, but important subjects, like waking up in the morning, stretching and pooping. As his son read from the zines, Fred demonstrated the steps in each zine through a series of gestures and yells.

It was hilarious.

(It should be noted, too, that “How to Fix You” is co-written and illustrated by August Sasaki, Fred’s grandson. I’m sure August would have taken the performance to another level, if only bars let 8-year-olds in…)

The audio to Fred and Fred’s performance is above. I’m sad I have no photos or video of the occasion, it was one of the best things I’ve ever seen at a reading, but am happy I can share this audio with you.
